Participate in a rich folk tradition that has been passed down through generations, recognized by UNESCO as a masterpiece of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity. In this series of workshops, the instructors will teach a variety of songs, ranging from lively toasting and horse-riding songs to meditative chants. The instructors will provide lyrics and occasionally notated scores, but all songs will be taught by ear, as this is the most effective way to convey the unique musical nuances of this tradition.
The workshop will focus on developing specific vocal techniques that are characteristic of Georgian singing. If time and enthusiasm permit, the instructors may even teach a round dance, including both the song and the movements—it's a lot of fun!
The instructors will explain each song in the context of Georgia’s diverse regional styles, genres, and cultural narratives.
