We are delighted to be welcome Horatio Clare (6.87-90) to Malvern College this autumn to give the George Sayer Fellowship Lecture.Horatio Clare is an acclaimed author known for his travel, memoir, nature and children’s books. Horatio is known for his richly lyrical travel writing, blending vivid natural observation with human stories from the world’s edges – both geographic and cultural. From tracing swallow migrations across Africa in A Single Swallow to voyaging with container ship crews in Down to the Sea in Ships, Clare explores frontiers where wildlife and wonder thrive. His work spans memoir, reportage, children’s fiction, and re-imaginings of Welsh myth, all marked by a deep ethical awareness and a romantic sensibility. Whether writing about birds, the sea, or the complexities of globalisation, Clare invites readers into landscapes alive with beauty, tension, and meaning.
The George Sayer Fellowship lecture was established by the College in 2018 to honour George Sayer who was Head of English from 1949 until his retirement in 1974. Sayer was a close friend of JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis and went on to pen a biography of Lewis. It is said he persuaded Tolkien not to burn his manuscript of The Lord of the Rings when the author was losing faith in the novel.
This lecture is open to alumni, pupils, staff, local schools and the wider Malvern community.
