25th May marks one year since the killing of George Floyd. Join us in remembrance of George, and all the black lives taken by injustice in the USA, the UK and worldwide. Join us outside Derby City Council for a programme of short poems and speeches; wear something purple and #TakeTheKnee with us - a poignant, peaceful and socially distanced commemoration. The Council House will be lit up in purple light for the evening, in remembrance.
You can also take part from home, work or wherever you are on the day - post your photos on this event page, wearing something purple and/or taking the knee, and add your messages and reflections.
The family of George Floyd have named this anniversary 'The Day of Enlightenment', reflecting the awakening of so many people around the world in response to this injustice. The George Floyd Memorial Center would like the world to commemorate May 25th as the day the world came together for a common purpose: "What resulted was an awakening of minds to police brutality towards and against marginalized communities. 8 minutes and 46 seconds enlightened the world to the plight of Black Americans as well as marginalized communities across the world. Our voices were heard and these voices will no longer be silenced or ignored".
