About this Event
Important Information:
- ALL Scouts must bring physical proof of prerequisite completion to all classes.
- Pre-requisites MUST be completed prior to the in-person class:#3, #8D, & #9.
- ALL Scouts MUST BRING a SIGNED Blue Card to all classes for our Counselors to sign.
- ALL Scouts must wear their uniform.
- This is a drop-off class. Drive in through the outer gate and drop-off at the main brick building. Parents/leaders are welcome to wait onsite.
- Cancellations requested 2 or more weeks in advance will be refunded at the full price. Refunds are not available with less than 2 weeks notice.
- Instructors: Badges are taught by our certified Counselors who have completed the Youth Protection Training. They are certified through the Northern NJ, BSA Council. Our current Counselors are: Lauren Lynch, Nicole Vaccaro, Peter Lundell, Chris Campbell
- Cell phones will be collected at the beginning of each class, to ensure Scouts give their undivided attention to the badge Counselor.
Instructors:
Badges are taught by our certified Counselors who are experienced educators, have completed the Youth Protection Training, and are Wilderness First Aid certified. Prerequisites for Communication Merit Badge:
Requirement #3: Explain the following terms used in geocaching: waypoint, log, cache, accuracy, difficulty and terrain ratings, attributes, trackable. Choose five additional terms to explain to your counselor.
- Scouts must bring in a physical copy or hand written page with 5 additional terms beyond what is listed in Requirement 3 and their definitions.
Requirment #8D (bring container): Explain what Cache In Trash Out (CITO) means, and describe how you have practiced CITO at public geocaches or at a CITO event. Then, either create CITO containers to leave at public caches, or host a CITO event for your unit or for the public.
- Scouts must bring in their CITO container to leave at public caches to class. We will discuss the size, weather durability, and other key components of your container during class.
Requirement #9: Plan a geohunt for a youth group such as your troop or a neighboring pack, at school, or your place of worship. Choose a theme, set up a course with at least four waypoints, teach the players how to use a GPS unit, and play the game. Tell your counselor about your experience, and share the materials you used and developed for this event.
- Scouts must come in with a physical or written draft of your planned GeoHunt, include materials used, theme chosen, and a summary on your experience leading the event.
