"Scared Shell-less: Blue Claw crabs toughen up baby bivalves" by Arthur MabakaThis talk will discuss a popular crustacean, the blue claw crab, and the influences that these crabs can have on bivalves, like clams and oysters. Specifically, AJ will be discussing a research project of his where he raised two sets of juvenile oysters-- one was exposed to blue claw crabs and one was not. AJ found that oysters exposed to blue claw crabs grew thicker shells compared to the unexposed oysters. This suggests that the presence of blue claw crabs may enhance the resiliency/strength of juvenile oysters as they grow and develop, which could have useful insight for hatchery or restoration efforts.
Bio = AJ Mabaka is a local to Long Island who grew up crabbing and fishing throughout the East end. He was first introduced to Stony Brook University as a high school intern in Dr. Chris Gobler's Lab, and has returned as a graduate student after earning his bachelors in Environmental Science from Washington and Lee University. Now, AJ is a 2nd year PhD student in the School of Marine Sciences and his research focuses on shellfish biology, specifically considering how different species will respond to climate change and offshore wind development in the Mid-Atlantic region.
