About this Event

Celebrate the harvest season and grow your plant family by swapping siblings and propagating with us at Femme Fatale, DC! Plant swaps are the BEST way to connect with other plant people in your community! They are a great way to learn and expand your plant family for FREE.

As mindful gardeners, we will be grounding ourselves in the beginning of the harvest season aka Lughnasadh. It is the halfway point to the fall equinox. It’s the moment to show our infinite gratitude to Mother Earth, and hope for future harvests to come.

The event will be lead by Maryland Certified Professional Horticulturist and UMD Applied Entomology grad student, Caroline Hooks.

Date: August 1, 2021

Address: Femme Fatale DC

3409 Connecticut Ave NW, Washington, DC 20008

Tickets are free if you bring 5 or more plants or cuttings, or if you bring a potluck dish. If you are not bringing anything, tickets are $25.

Day of cash tips are greatly appreciated! (Even though this event is free, schlepping plants and supplies across the DMV is a hard labor of love!)

Masks will be required when people are crowding around the groups of plants. We will also take your contact info at the door, just as an added safety precaution.

August 1: Day of Event

2. Set up is from 2-5 pm.

Please drop your plants, food, and drinks off any time August 1 from 3 pm to 6 pm. You can organize your plants in the different categories we will make.

We would be thrilled to have extra dishes and plants, if you have any to share! Also extra volunteers are always welcome.

3. Event is 6 - 9 pm.

Plants and food are stories. We will have a short share and tell session where you have the opportunity to share a special memory, association, or special use for the plant or food you brought.

The swap will be done in shifts of 3. Each person will be counted off into group 1, 2, or 3. Each group will take turns choosing a plant from the lot. Each "shift" will be about 20 seconds, and we will cycle through until about all the plants are gone, and do a free for all for the stragglers that are left over.

If there's time left over, we will have a crash course in plant propagation where you can propagate more plants to take home. We may also collect seed present in the garden!

4. Break down is at 9 pm.

Meet the host!

“Caroline Hooks (she, her), owner of glassceilingplants, is a well-seasoned intersectional horticulturist. Her work has included many different settings: a plant research facility, the landscaping industry, a tree farm, ornamental plant nurseries, a conservatory, many greenhouses, and a theme park. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Horticulture and is pursuing a Masters of Professional Studies in Applied Entomology at UMD. She is also a Maryland Certified Pesticide applicator.

Horticulture was chosen by her abuser and father. The same field that she was ashamed of, slowly allowed her to grow and heal. After a long journey in a male-dominated industry, she finally loves her day job and is in CPTSD recovery. She wants to share the work she has done and the inspiration that can be drawn from mindful gardening.”

"I thought of the name ‘glassceilingplants’ while walking across the gutters of the glass greenhouse I work in. Our mission is to propagate mindful gardeners of every race, class, gender, and age; to steward ecological services and provide grounding experiences. I aim to educate people on the psychological benefits of connecting to their own nature through the organisms they can help bring life to and those organism’s seasonal phenology. (Phenology: the study of cyclic and seasonal natural phenomena, especially in relation to climate and plant and animal life.)

I want to create something like a “Master Gardener” program that is a little more edgy, targeted at Millennials, Gen X, and Gen Z. I truly believe these programs make communities stronger, though they are currently only available during working hours.

You can purchase plants propagated by yours truly at Femme Fatale DC, 3409 Connecticut Ave NW, Washington, DC 20008.

I also want to use this platform to share my story, advocate for child abuse victims and survivors, universal health care, and equity in general."
