A tale of the nightlife of old nineteenth century Paris, the story takes place in the most popular room of a fashionable restaurant.Gaîté Parisienne was choreographed in 1938 for the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo by Léonide Massine, to music by Jacques Offenbach. Performed in one act, the ballet depicts the amorous flirtations, convivial dancing, and high spirits of a diverse group of people who patronize a fashionable café one evening during the period of the Second Empire. It was a time when love was brief and casual, but intense, and when the day began at nine o’clock in the evening.
