Questions of King Milinda" (Milindapañha)
For this term's reading seminar, we will explore one of the earliest Buddhist philosophical texts, "Questions of King Milinda" (Milindapañha). Our primary focus will be on its Chinese translation, 《那先比丘经》, though we will also reference the Pāli version. Believed to document a conversation between the Indian Buddhist philosopher Nāgasena and the 2nd century BC Indo-Greek King Menander I (Pāli: Milinda) of Bactria, this text offers profound insights into the fundamental philosophical arguments in Buddhism. It serves as an excellent primer for newcomers, especially those interested in Buddhist philosophy. Participants with a basic understanding of classical Chinese will find additional depth in the discussion.
We look forward to seeing you there! Feel free to bring friends and anyone interested in joining our sessions.
