Gather with people from different SEQ faith communities to commemorate the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, which is observed annually by the United Nations in late November.Inspired by a UN headquarters exhibition by the same name, the theme of this vigil is “Palestine: a Land with a People”.
Those gathered will reflect on the impacts of the ongoing 1948 Nakba (“catastrophe”), the 1967 occupation of the West Bank and Gaza, and the current genocide in Gaza, while honouring the resilience and culture of Palestinian people through:
• prayers by recognised faith leaders
• holy text readings by recognised faith leaders
• storytelling by Palestinians
• prayer spaces / reflection stations.
Together, we will pray for:
• an end to the genocide in Gaza*
• an end to the occupation in Gaza and the West Bank^
• a just peace, with self-determination for Palestinian people#.
Please bring:
• friends, colleagues and family members (children are welcome)
• a cushion (Council has asked that the vigil be chair-free, please)
• open hearts.
LED candles and glow sticks will be provided.
This is a vigil especially for those more comfortable with prayer or reflection rather than rallying/marching — please leave signage/banners at home (those who gather will be invited to sign the "Praying for Gaza" banner).
The vigil will commence at 6.45pm and close at 7.45pm.
Ahead of the vigil starting from 4pm, medical and media professionals will read the names of healthcare workers and journalists who have been killed over the last 12 months.
Those who do not practise a faith/spirituality are warmly encouraged to join in.
The 'Notice of Intention' to assemble has been received by Brisbane City Council and Reddacliff Place in Brisbane Square has been booked.
If the weather is wet, an alternative indoor venue will be announced.
