History

Did you know that Baltimore once had a garment industry that faded over 50-years ago? In the 1970's there was a max exodus and factories closed due to offshoring and the rise of the unions fighting for fair wages and improved working conditions.

Indonesian American fashion entrepreneur Stacy Stube had been working in the luxury fashion industry between the US, Europe and Asia for over 20-years before returning to her hometown of Baltimore, Maryland and was driven to fight to revitalize the industry.

She had been campaigning around the loss of industry since 2017, but it was not until colleagues working in the industry died suddenly that she knew that something more had to be done.

In January 2021, Stube ran 200-miles over 8-days to fundraise to convert an abandoned garment factory into a school to ignite a new wave of industry.

Despite, not raising all the money needed to do the work the city took notice and various individuals from the Baltimore community reached out. What started as a 5,000 sq ft area has now transformed into an entire garment district and needle trades floor in the heart of Stube's childhood neighborhood of Pigtown in the Wicomico building also known as the Baltimore Innovation Center.

This work has spanned 5+ years see the Andy Warhol Foundation funded short documentary about the Needle Trade.

We are thrilled that the industry has turned a new chapter and continues to evolve with kindness, compassion and humanity. The industry died because it did not work in its original form. This new wave of industry is far more collaborative and impact driven to transform that nature in which we sew clothes together as a community. Learn more about the Fashion Innovation Hub.

We look forward to showing you around.

Sincerely,

Stacy Stube
