Flautist and composer Gareth Lockrane began playing at the age of 10, and at 14, discovered jazz music through his father’s record collection. His early influences included Cannonball Adderley, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, Bill Evans and Stan Getz, and beyond the jazz world, he took interest in BB King, Jimi Hendrix, and Albert King amongst others.
Having studied at the Royal Academy of Music and on New York’s Lake Placid Jazz Course in 2000 with the likes of Joe Lovano, he began to expand his instrument range to include piccolo, alto and bass flutes, whilst establishing his own ensemble projects. As a sideman, he has worked with James Taylor Quartet, as a featured soloist with Tommy Smith's Scottish National Jazz Orchestra, and played on numerous high-profile recording sessions.
Lockrane formed Grooveyard in 2002 with saxophonist Alex Garnett. Their critically-acclaimed album Put The Cat Out won them the ‘Best European Jazz Group’ award at the 2003 Granada Jazz Festival. Their 2012 album, The Strut, served as a sequel to their debut and was named ‘Jazz album of the year’ in MOJO magazine.
