Community art: create butterflies for Garden of Hope, reflecting on suicide, mental health & hope.
About this Event

The Garden of Hope is a powerful temporary art installation featuring 98 large steel butterflies, each representing a life lost to suicide in Lincolnshire in 2024. This project creates a peaceful yet impactful reflective space, encouraging conversations around mental health, suicide awareness, and - most importantly - hope.

Through art, we hope to spark meaningful dialogue, reduce stigma, and remind every visitor: you are not alone.

The installation will launch at Belton House in March 2026, and tour locations across Lincolnshire in spring and summer 2026 - ending at Grantham House in September. Local schools and community groups have been invited to paint the steel butterflies with designs symbolising 'hope'.

Now, thanks to Grantham Arts, the wider community is invited to take part. Two special workshops will give individuals the chance to design and paint a butterfly together. No equipment or experience is needed - everything is provided. Working in groups of up to four, you’ll share ideas and create a unique butterfly that will become part of the Garden of Hope, a collective expression of remembrance and hope for the future.

Ask yourself: What does ‘hope’ mean to you? Is it a colour, a word, a symbol, a feeling?

This workshop is generously being hosted by Grantham Arts. We are incredibly grateful for their support.

Why Butterflies?

Butterflies embody transformation, freedom, and hope. Their journey from caterpillar to butterfly shows that even slow, difficult change can lead to something beautiful. Emerging from a cocoon, they symbolise new beginnings and remind us that growth is possible, resilience is real, and hope can carry us toward brighter days.
