Join The Cultural Landscape Foundation (TCLF) and Jennifer Horn, founding principal of JHLA, for a remarkable Garden Dialogue touring the distinctive collection of gardens that make up the landscape of the House on Willow Hill, and learn the secrets behind their creation.
When JHLA first visited the site in Vienna, an updated cabin from the 1800s was on site, adjacent to a late-twentieth-century house. The owners were dedicated to preserving the cabin while building their new modern English country house designed by Barnes Vanze Associates. The preservation of the cabin influenced the architecture and was critical to the site plan.
The area around the cabin is referred to as the “Remnant Garden.” JHLA established a terrace that felt authentic to the cabin itself: vernacular, even improvised. The landscape design is what JHLA imagines was once on the site: an allée of crabapples line the driveway leading to the motor court, and drifts of boxwood and sweetbox line the beds of the front façade. At the pool, a perennial border of iris, daisy, and various herbs offer color during the swimming season, while in more distant beds, deer-resistant plants, such as viburnum and butterfly bush, provide color. Specimen trees, such as Deodar cedar and magnolia, minimize views of neighboring houses.
About the landscape architect
As a high school student, Jennifer Horn was hired for part time work at a plant nursery in Northern Virginia. Within months she became hooked, and decided to study horticulture and landscape architecture and to, one day, launch her own design firm. From 1999 until 2009 Jennifer practiced in New York City. Her experience included designing exhibits for the Bronx Zoo; developing the ecological program for Fresh Kills Park at New York's Department of City Planning; and designing gardens, estates and parks for Edmund Hollander Landscape Architect and Deborah Nevins Associates. Since founding JHLA, Jennifer has continued to design luxury landscapes for residences, communities and resorts. She has won two silver awards from the Association of Professional Landscape Designers, her projects have been featured in Home & Design, Northern Virginia Magazine, DC Architecture, Hearth and Home, and the Washington Post. In 2017, Washingtonian magazine named Jennifer a "woman to watch".

Refund Policy: Cancellations and Refunds will be granted according to the following schedule:
- Up to two (2) weeks in advance: 50% (Deduction represents administrative processing fees)
- No refunds will be made for cancellations thirteen (13) days prior to event
- No refunds will be made for “No Shows” (a person who registers for a program but who does not cancel registration or attend the program).
- Refunds will be processed as they are received or after the conclusion of the program, depending on the program date and when cancellation occurs. Refunds may take five (5) to seven (7) business days to process.
