This vibrant exhibit will be on display at Juniper Art Gallery October 2nd through November 17th. Their opening reception coincides with the 2024 Lotus World Music Festival as Bloomington celebrates art and music from around the globe!
Donna Shortt, Artist’s Statement:
Our travels to France were a once-in-a-lifetime experience. In May 2019, we opted to explore the picturesque region of Provence, where we were delighted to find fields of vibrant poppies in full bloom, even sprouting from the crevices of ancient buildings. We spent our days discovering quaint towns and taking the opportunity to paint in the same locations where renowned French artists once worked.
In 2023, we ventured to the historically rich region of Brittany, where we marveled at the temperate climate and breathtaking ocean views. Our time was filled with exploring an ancient lighthouse and immersing ourselves in the region's past. It would be unfair to say which trip was more enjoyable, as each holds a special place in our hearts for different reasons.
Pamela Newell, Artist’s Statement:
I love to paint from life. There is a richness in a subject that can only be captured by painting from direct observation. It’s like experiencing a live symphony versus a recording – it is where I am able to respond spontaneously to my subject.
Whether painting a bouquet of fresh flowers, or creating landscape work based on memory and plein air studies, my challenge is to suffuse my paintings with light and emotion.
Edge variety, shape and rich color play an important role in my work, directing the eye throughout the composition. I try to describe only the essence of a subject leaving out unnecessary details, and capture the effect of light, not objects. I want the viewer to connect to the work through their own experience. My goal is to uplift the spirit and reflect the beauty I find in the world.
