About this Event

Join us for a gallery talk in conversation with Helen Oxenbury, the award-winning children’s book illustrator currently exhibiting in the Harley Gallery, and Nicolette Jones, Children’s Book editor for the Sunday Times.

Nicolette and Helen will reflect on Helen’s six-decade career, from her pioneering baby board books to classics like We’re Going on a Bear Hunt, and her latest collaboration with Michael Rosen, Oh Dear, Look What I Got!, published by Walker Books.

Following the talk, there will be an opportunity to attend a short Book Signing with Helen Oxenbury. Please note, the book signing is ticketed separately, ensure you have a ticket to both the talk and signing if you would like to attend both events.

Helen Oxenbury

Helen Oxenbury is one of the world’s most popular and acclaimed children’s book illustrators, and twice winner of the Kate Greenaway Medal. Born in Ipswich, Oxenbury suffered from asthma as a child which periodically left her bedridden – drawing became a favourite distraction and lifeline.

She enrolled in the theatre arts department at London’s Central School of Art, and in 1957 she met fellow student and illustrator John Burningham, who she would later marry. Upon graduating, Oxenbury joined the Colchester Repertory Theatre and travelled to Habima, Israel’s national theatre, where she became a set designer.

After the birth of their first child, Burningham encouraged Oxenbury to try illustrating children’s books herself and she didn’t look back. She has won numerous awards and illustrated over 30 children’s books throughout her 50-year career.
