Exhibiting in the Blackfoot Communications Gallery through July
The ZACC is thrilled to present ’The Swansons Do Prints’, works by Julie Swanson, Richard Swanson, and Penny Pride, in the Blackfoot Communications Gallery throughout July. Works are available for purchase, and Julie will be present at the opening reception.
ABOUT THE ART
The Swansons were invited to exhibit prints in the Blackfoot Communications Gallery this July, with Last Best Print Fest 2024. Julie Swanson Skinner is currently a Print Shop Intern at the ZACC. She is sister to Richard Swanson, a sculptor and ceramic artist in Helena who has recently developed an interest in printmaking. His wife is Penny Price Swanson, also a ceramic artist and art educator.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS
JULIE SWANSON SKINNER
Julie Swanson Skinner focused on printmaking in college at Southwest Minnesota State University and has continued to take workshops and classes over the years. After moving to Missoula in 2020 her daughter introduced her to the ZACC where she took several classes, eventually becoming a volunteer. The work in this exhibit will showcase examples of her work over the past decades. Earlier work was mainly intaglio and lithography. After college, she found relief printing more accessible and so she focused on woodblock and linoleum prints. Recent work has been made possible through access to the ZACC print shop where she is a print shop intern.
Julie’s images tend to reflect the natural world, sometimes with a little playfulness. She enjoys the way layers of color interact on the page and how the carving lines can add expression
RICHARD SWANSON
Richard Swanson’s life-long career in art began in his mid-20’s as a studio potter and expanded to multimedia sculpture in his early 40’s. Since earning his MFA at the University of Montana in 1994 at the age of 50 he has concentrated on large scale public artwork, multimedia museum installations and interactive sculpture for dance on stage and in the landscape, all the while maintaining his interest in studio ceramics. He has been a resident artist at the Archie Bray Foundation, installed over a dozen permanent public art installations, collaborated with choreographers on several dance projects and been invited to do installations in several prominent regional museums as well as received career affirming grants from the Montana Arts Council, The Myrna Loy, the Art Matters Foundation among others. Now 80 years old, he has just begun exploring the world of linocut prints—his first serious exploration of two dimensional space. To get an overview of Richard’s career visit richardswanson.org.
PENNY PRICE SWANSON
Penny Price Swanson graduated from Concordia College in Moorhead Minnesota with a double major in Art and Elementary Education. While teaching 3rd grade in Boulder, Colorado, she joined the Boulder Potters’ Guild. There she honed her pottery skills.
Penny relocated to Helena, Montana when she accepted a two-year residency at the Archie Bray Foundation. After her Bray residency, Penny taught half-time kindergarten in the morning followed by pottery making in the afternoons. This was followed by several years of full-time pottery making. A chance to teach Middle School art brought her back into the classroom, teaching linocut printing and silk screen techniques. This will be the first showing of her prints in a gallery.
