The public is invited to attend a FREE opening reception on June 28 from 6-8 pm where the artists will be present, and refreshments will be served. From June 28 to August 9, 2024, Quad City Arts presents oil paintings by Chantal Danyluk and screen prints by Kate Goodvin.Chantal Danyluk is an oil painter whose works are painted on large panels of plywood or MDF board which are cut around the silhouettes of her subjects, breaking away from the typical window of squared canvas. These subjects are whimsical and surreal, often depicting humanoid figures in drastic situations. Danyluk uses tongue-in-cheek visual metaphors to comment on the disillusionment many young people feel about the unattainable ideals of life in conjunction with the pressures of our society. She invites viewers to “contemplate how these serious themes might resonate with them”.
Kate Goodvin is a screenprint artist whose work utilizes hundreds of layers that she prints using her own paper stencil process that she developed during the height of the pandemic. She has recently also begun to combine this unique screenprinting process with a collage applique technique borrowed from quilt making. Goodvin’s imagery focuses on people and their environments as they relate to contemporary, everyday life. The results are saturated and intricate compositions that create “a narrative that enforces the tension of living in an overbearing, but also joyous, space and time”.
Danyluk and Goodvin’s work pairs well together aesthetically and thematically. Their saturated colors and figurative subject matter complement nicely. Each body of work reflects on the burdens of current culture.
