Coming to the Miller Gallery!
Local artist Deborah Bassett brings in 30 years' worth of artistic expression in her exhibition, ‘Painting in Venice, Boston, New Orleans & Pensacola’. With works having been compared to Matisse, Gaugain, and other post-impressionists who use bold color and paint expressively, this is one exhibit you will not want to miss.
These works include still life paintings made while living in Boston in the early 1990s, small paintings carried on the plane with me back to the U.S. after living in Italy in the late 1990s, large and colorful abstract paintings that have been exhibited in juried shows in Northwest Florida, and a selection of linocut originals made most recently. The works tell a story of the artist’s journey as a painter, with a consistent theme of vibrant hues and intensity of the subject matter, whether a self-portrait with her guitar or a triptych of different cultural interpretations of Mary.
On display July 5 - 27.
-About Deborah Bassett-
I am a multi-disciplinary and transdisciplinary artist who works with images, words, and sounds. I began creating art purposefully after experiencing a life-altering event in 2013–the birth of my child– which precipitated my early retreat from full-time academic research in the area of social and cultural determinants of health with an emphasis on psychiatric conditions in North American Indigenous populations. As an artist, I draw on these experiences, as well as my experiences as a former journalist and world traveler, to produce work that I intend to be thoughtful, intentional, and accessible using a range of modalities that includes two-dimensional visual art (linocut printing, painting, and photography), poetry, and composing and producing original electronic music. In short, I view my life as my ongoing artwork.
