Space Hulk League
As you read the following description, you will notice that winning your individual games matters very little for the outcome of this league. The purpose of this league is to focus on the more narrative side of the game instead of pure competitive matched play. All of the games will still be played under matched play conditions, but going 8-0 vs 0-8 will have very little bearing on your chances of winning the league or your enjoyment of it.
For this league, people will explore a space hulk, trying to collect loot, K*ll the bad guys, and survive. The entry fee for this league will be $20. Members of the winning team will receive $60 in store credit. In addition, there are several mystery prizes which will be given out at the end of the league based on certain, as of now, hidden, criteria.
To signup for the league, please message me your name and the teams you are willing to play on in order of priority. I will do my best to put everyone on their first choice, but in order to keep the teams at an even number, some people may have to play their second or third choice.
At the beginning of the league, you will be randomly dropped into a section of the Space Hulk (Found here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1pwB4O-CdT77F81wrnGDz4W18Q27QbaBa/view?usp=sharing ). You will not know which way you are facing or which room or corridor you are in. You have been tasked with exploring the space hulk FOR SCIENCE (more on that later.)
Between each week, players will be required to meet with Greg in person, via Discord, on Facebook Messenger, or using some other method to determine their movement around the Space Hulk. These meetings should take between 5 and 15 minutes.
Each week, players will receive an amount of stamina according to their week’s game(s), which will be used to move through the Space Hulk. 100 Stamina for playing, +10 for a win, +20 if you are fully painted or painted a new unit that week, +20 for playing on Thursday. Players will expend stamina in the following ways:
1 Stamina is expended for moving one square in the space hulk.
5 Stamina is expended for searching a room in the space hulk.
At some points, players may be given a choice to expend a variable amount of stamina to complete a task.
As you move through the space hulk, it is highly recommended that you keep track of the rooms and corridors you are passing through. The quicker you find out where you are, the sooner you can start to move toward the higher-valued rooms. The amount of stars in a room on the map represent your chances of finding better loot. While it is possible to find anything from the list in a one star room, your chances of finding higher tier items increases dramatically in a 3 star room. Players will be sorted into three teams: Chaos, Imperium, and Xenos. Information you uncover about the space hulk can be shared with your teammates. Every piece of loot you uncover will involve some sort of bonus for your army, be it an extra shiny sword, a map of the surrounding corridors, a bucket of alien goop, etc. In addition to its bonus, each piece of loot will have a scientific value associated with it. When you uncover a piece of loot, you may choose to forgo the bonus it gives and instead gain that many science points. The team that gathers the most science points throughout the league will be the winner.
Each player will be required to make a 6000-point roster before the league starts. However, you do not actually have to own 6000 points. For example, if you only own two predators, you may include 5 in your 6k roster, with the understanding that no more than two would ever appear in a list of yours. For the 6000 point roster, unique units are still limited to 1 but the rule of 3 is now the rule of 5 and the rule of 6 is now the rule of 12 (your lists for individual games must still follow the matched play guidelines in the rule book). It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, although not required, that you play on Thursday nights. Pairings will be posted the Monday before a league night and you will have through the Sunday before the next league night to play your game(s). For example, the week one pairings will be posted September 16, and you will have until 11:59pm on September 29 to play your games.
Games will be played on the following schedule:
September 19th - 3, 500-point games. Three different lists. No permadeath
October 3rd - 2, 1000-point games. Two different lists. No Permadeath
October 17th - 1 2000-point game. Permadeath.
October 31st - 1 2000-point game. Permadeath.
November 14th - 1 2000-point game. Permadeath.
As you see, some of the weeks include the word “Permadeath,” this means that any units that are completely destroyed in those games are removed from your 6000 point roster and can not be used in any game going forward. Any unit that is reduced to below half strength will have to roll a die at the end of the game, on a 1-3, the unit’s ability to continue the fight has been compromised due to the amount of casualties it has sustained and it is removed from your 6000 point roster and can not be used in any game going forward.
At any time during your games, you may elect to “route” a unit, a routing unit will move at double its movement speed towards your long table edge. If a unit successfully gets to your long table edge, they are removed from the current battle where it will obviously be immune to being destroyed, but also, will remove the need for it to roll a die at the end of the battle if it is below half strength.
Any units that move off of their controller’s long table edge, or are at or above half strength when the battle ends can be used like normal in the next game.
If there are any questions, please do not hesitate to ask!
