The Durham Miners Gala off to Newcastle upon Tyne for a great night of celebration with live music and guest speakers – and you’re invited.40 years on from the Miners Strike, we are hosting a social at Tyneside Irish Centre, 43 Gallowgate Street, NE1 4SG on Friday 28 February from 7pm until midnight.
Our guest speakers are Kevin Maguire, journalist, broadcaster and associate editor of the Daily Mirror, Alan Mardghum, Secretary of the Durham Miners Association and Heather Wood, from National Women Against Pit Closures.
We'll have a hot buffet, a raffle, and an auction conducted by John Anderson, legendary Newcastle United captain and Ireland international.
There'll also be live music from some of the North East's best pop/ rock musicians - The Welfare Collective is the new name and formulation built from the great County Durham band DENNIS, with the same brass and rock elements celebrating our mining communities.
Forty years on from the strike, the Gala stands proudly as the greatest legacy of the miners, their families and their communities. This promises to be another cracking event bringing together the labour and trade union movement from across the region in the spirit of the Gala.
You'll get all of the above for just £20 per person (inc food) and every penny raised will go to the Marras – Friends of Durham Miners Gala in support of The Big Meeting.
