Join us at Books & Books for a special interview with Nilo Cruz, Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright and writer-director of Sotto Voce, in conversation with Gabriell Salgado, star of GableStage’s production running from January 23rd to February 15th. Sotto Voce is a lyrical meditation on memory, longing, and the legacy of the Holocaust. Cruz will share insights into creating and directing his own play, exploring its themes, characters, and the journey from page to stage. About The Author
Nilo Cruz gained national prominence in 2003 when he won the Pulitzer Prize for drama for his play Anna in the Tropics, which also won the Steinberg award and was nominated for a Tony Award. His plays include A Park in Our House; Two Sisters and a Piano; A Bicycle Country; Hortensia and the Museum of Dreams; Lorca in a Green Dress; Hurricane; Bathing in Moonlight; Hotel Desiderium; Exquisite Agony and Thirst in Water Street. His work has been seen at numerous theaters around the country and around the world.
As a lyricist, he has written the libretto The Last Dream of Frida and Diego, which was presented at San Diego, Los Angeles and San Francisco Opera. A new production of this opera will open in May of 2025 at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. Cruz also adapted Ann Patchett’s 2001 novel Bel Canto for the Lyric Opera of Chicago.
Cruz received an M.F.A. from Brown University and an honorary doctorate degree from Whittier College. He has taught drama at Yale, Brown, NYU, the University of Iowa and the University of Miami.

Gabriell Salgado (Saquiel Rafaeli/ Ariel Strauss) is thrilled to be back at GableStage after starring in Charise Castro Smith’s El Huracán directed by Dámaso Rodriguez. Most recent credits include The Bodyguard at Slowburn Theater, Laughs in Spanish at Seattle Rep, Anna in the Tropics at Asolo Rep, The Actors at Theater Row (Off-Broadway), The Pillowman at Zoetic Stage, and CBS’ Blue Bloods (co-star). Other notable productions include the 20th anniversary of Anna in the Tropics directed by Nilo Cruz, Clyde’s (Carbonell Award), 4,000 Miles, Red Speedo, & Frankenstein.
