Event Info:
Join us November 15, 2024, for our Annual Meeting. Once again we will meet at the Avon Senior Center, 635 W Avon Rd, Avon, CT 06001. The meeting starts at 7:00 pm and there will be light refreshments.
Our guest speaker this year is Ray Charpentier, MS-Go, https://multiplesclerosis-go.com/.
In 2008 after many years of tests, Ray was diagnosed with primary progressive multiple sclerosis. This is a rare and aggressive form of MS. He had been an avid cyclist as a teenager, having a road bike, mountain bike and hybrid. After his deteriorating balance triggered a fall, he could no longer ride. The exercise therapist at Mt. Sinai Hospital in Hartford connected Ray with Ti-Trikes in Simsbury, who provided him with a trike to use for the BikeMS ride in CT. Ray was hooked on cycling again.
He began riding constantly and rode eight BikeMS rides in New England and New York City. His most challenging ride was the Cape Cod Getaway from Braintree to Provincetown, MA, for a two-day total of 152 miles.
Ray found his MS becoming quieter with daily exercise as well as diet modification and vitamin supplementation. He decided to go off the MS drugs in 2018 and continues to overcome MS.
In 2015, he founded MS-GO as an online event and support group calendar that quickly went national. It has grown into a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that helps people with MS, cancer, autism, Parkinson’s, dementia and stroke. They are now working on a revolutionary social media platform that will focus on connecting people with 33 adverse health conditions.
When the National MS Society discontinued BikeMS in CT, NH and VT in 2022, Ray’s group seized that opportunity to have the Support Info-Go Bike Ride. Their first annual ride was September 28, 2024. The Support Info-GO initiative now has five power assist trikes to lend out to people with different health conditions so they, too, can experience the feeling of freedom that comes from cycling.
