Meeting to discuss next steps for the pub as Will and Sarah are moving on in August. Can we Ensure the future of our village pub
As many of you are aware, the village pub, St Dunstans Inn is at a
crossroads. Despite efforts over the past couple of years to find a new
owner/operator, there are no prospective buyers on the horizon, the risk
of St Dunstan Inn closing its doors looms large.
We would like to explore
the possibility of the community coming together to own the pub and the
operational options that could work.
Exploring Community Ownership
The idea of a community-owned pub is not new, and there are several
successful models to draw inspiration from.
Community ownership can
ensure that St Dunstan Inn continues to operate as a central hub for
social gatherings, celebrations, and village events.
To discuss this potential solution in detail, a meeting has been scheduled
for the 9th April 2025 at St Dunstan Inn. During this gathering, we will
explore the various options available, potential funding sources, and
gauge the community's appetite for supporting a community-owned pub.
There are several models under which a community-owned pub can
operate, each with its unique advantages and considerations:
Community Interest Company (CIC) where surpluses are reinvested
into the business or the community rather than being used to maximize
profits for shareholders and owners.
Enterprise Investment Scheme (EIS) Another avenue to explore is the
Enterprise Investment Scheme (EIS), which offers significant tax
advantages. This scheme has been used successfully in other
communities to acquire local assets.
There are several other models, but for any to succeed, we need strong
community engagement and support. The meeting on the 9th of April is
an opportunity for everyone to voice their opinions, share ideas, and
commit to taking action. We will also discuss potential funding avenues,
including grants, loans, and community fundraising initiatives.
The future of St Dunstan Inn lies in our hands. By coming together as a
community, we have the power to secure the legacy of Langley village
pub and ensure its continued operation for years to come. We look
forward to seeing you all at the meeting on the 9th of April and working
together to keep the spirit of St Dunstan Inn alive.
