Fuse Ensemble’s concert season Speech and Silence for 2024/2025 includes recent chamber works by composers Pamela Z, Gina Biver, Brittany J. Green, Caroline Shaw, and a brand-new work for solo bass by bassist/composer Ethan Foote. The season also includes new video works by new media artist Edgar Endress, with poetry by Colette Inez.Very special guests include three stellar Richmond artists: bass clarinetist JC Kuhl, and vocalists Ashley Larson and Laura Ann Singh.

Speech and Silence concert season brings to the fore two ways of listening. In an alternating series of quiet videos by new media artist Edgar Endress and live music works performed by Fuse Ensemble, we gather in these two realms and explore the deep possibilities that lie within and outside of our auditory sphere. The audience contemplates a nearly silent, direct experience of the visual world in front of them; until listening is reawakened, drawn outwards by the live music that follows until the cycle begins anew. It has been said that while speech often divides us, silence has the power to connect us – not only to each other, but to our deeper selves. Two ways of listening explored in succession: a push-pull, inside-out encounter between these worlds, Fuse Ensemble’s Speech and Silence holds much for the audience to discover.
