In this one-week workshop, learn how to pull custom tubing in the hot shop while also learning basic tube manipulation in the neon studio!
About this Event

Participants in this one week workshop will pull custom tubing in the hot shop while also learning basic tube manipulation in the neon studio. In the glassblowing studio, the class in the glass shop will explore a range of color and texture pathways including: glass frits, optic molds, overlays, stuff cups and cane pick ups to create custom neon tubing. We will then take this tubing to the neon shop where students will learn basic wiring, bends, seals and bubbles to create illuminated neon art. Intermediate glassblowing/beginning neon.

What to Expect: The class will have demonstrations and practice time in the neon and

glassblowing studios each day. Having at least a year of glassblowing experience and a proficiency in gathering glass from the furnace is required. Participants work in teams in the glass shop and have solo torch time in the neon studio. No experience is required in the

neon studio. Students can expect to leave the class with a hand pulled glass, illuminated neon tube.  While there will be a demonstration on the bombarding and filling process, students will not be permitted to operate the bombarding/ gas filling manifold. Particularly for first-time neon students, instructors and TA's may aid directly in finishing pieces, especially welding on electrodes to our neon units. Read more about how to prepare for class on our Registration Info page.

Additional work time for intensive students: Students will also have access to additional hours in the hot shop, without instruction, on Wednesday to Saturday from 12-4pm. Students must be able to work safely in the studio, and be able to set up their area without needing instruction. Students participating in student hours will need to be approved by the instructor and TA’s.

Eligibility: This is an intermediate level course, previous experience is required. Open to ages 14 and up.

This is an in-person class taking place on-site at UrbanGlass. Health and safety guidelines will be emailed to you upon registration.
