About this Event
Join us for a one-of-a-kind evening of spoken word, visual art, music, and libations.
This month's event at The Underground features:
✨ Cedar Rapids-based interdisciplinary artist Lovar Davis ( L.D.) Kidd who draws from his background in dance to pair movement and words on stage. His performance practice has expanded to include creating abstract art using paint on canvas, created by the movement of his body and feet as he delivers spoken word.
✨ Rockford, Illinois-based spoken word poet Christopher D. Sims who has cultivated his writing and performance styles with the guidance of the rap/hip-hop genre, as well as the Black spoken word and power movement of the 1960s and 1970s.
With featured musician:
✨ Iowa City-based Jim Swim whose songs unwind like good conversation, moving from the everyday to the abstract, the personal to the universal, with honest ease.
• Doors open at 7:00pm (event begins at 7:30pm).
• Best suited for 17+ years
• Open mic slots are filled by signup at the door and limited to 3 minutes per person
Spaces are limited. Vibe is infinite.
ACCESSIBILITY:
This is a historic building with elevator access to the third floor where our event is held. However, it's a vintage elevator that requires a familiar hand to operate it (this is the only unfortunate challenge about this space). So if you require or desire elevator access, please plan on arriving early enough to "hitch a ride" up the elevator in ten minute intervals at approximately 7:00, 7:10, and 7:20pm.
SPONSORS:
Thank you to Benz Beverage Depot for their generous donation of libations. We also of non-alcoholic options available.
Thank you to Mad Modern for the cozy visual aesthetic. Original sculptures made by hand and light fixtures designed by David Owens -- as well as area rugs and some furnishings -- are courtesy of Mad Modern and are all available for purchase.
