Every year I watch over 500 short films of all types. For our June screening I’ve put together a collection of the best comedic shorts I’ve seen over the last 18 months or so.Since arriving in Champaign, I’ve done something I’ve never done before, attend a film festival screening without knowing anything about the films playing. Oddly enough, that’s almost everything I’ve attended here. The Krampusnacht Freeky Film Festival, The CU International Film Festival, and the CMM 48-Hour Film Competition didn’t give any indication of what was screening, and the UIUC Student Film Festival simply announced a list of films and directors, with no indication of what any of the films were about. I’m going to honor this tradition by not releasing any info about most of the films showing.
This collection of comedic short films is extremely diverse, from a raunchy, R-rated boisterous short film, to CU resident Thomas Nicol's brand new, elegant chess-themed first date film The Venus Gambit. (Thomas runs the aforementioned Krampusnacht Freeky Film Festival, which this film would not at all fit in with). There's also a fantastic satirical film about the marketing team of the Anne Frank gift shop, which was shortlisted for the Academy Awards, and a bizarre wordless experimental animation short, as well as many others. The program is expected to run about the length of a feature film. 90-100 minutes.
