What is the largest organism on Earth? You might think it’s a whale or a tree, but it’s actually a fungus! Fungi are in our soil, our food, and even in us. They are everywhere, quietly shaping life on Earth. But are they our hidden allies or unseen enemies? And is this balance shifting? On November 19, Science Café Nijmegen will dive into the mysterious world of fungi. From the mushrooms sprouting after rain to microscopic molds that thrive in the shadows, fungi intrigue and frighten in equal measure.
Jos Houbraken (Westerdijk Fungal Biodiversity Institute) will open the door to the fascinating and diverse world of fungi and show what makes these organisms so special. He researches their enormous diversity and explores applications for varieties of fungi. Karin Scholtmeijer (Wageningen University & Research) will then discuss the many roles fungi play in ecosystems and their potential in biotechnology. She studies how fungi can transform waste materials into valuable resources like protein-rich food. Finally, Jochem Buil (Radboudumc) will take us to the medical setting, where fungi can be deadly. His work focuses on fungal infections, the growing issue of antifungal resistance, and developing new strategies and treatments to outsmart these elusive pathogens.
The evening will be set to live music by Yandra, who weave Brazilian traditions with jazz and world music elements. Let Yandra’s warm melodies and earthy rhythms carry you through the night as we explore nature’s most secretive kingdom.
