About this Event
Who We Are:
Sankofa Roots is a land-based learning and healing organization that offers outdoor preparedness & survival trainings with a decolonial lens to people who identify as Black, Indigenous and/or Queer.
We seek to equip as many of our people as possible with the skills we need to survive and thrive in outdoor conditions, while invoking ancestral wisdoms rooted in our lineages to guide our learning and remembering, and cultivating sustainable land-based practices with future generations in mind.
What You'll Learn:
Join us for a moderate trail hike, where we’ll identify wild fungi commonly found on Chochenyo Ohlone land (Oakland, CA.) Learn how to identify and ethically forage various wild mushrooms for food and medicine 🍄🟫
Your Guide:
Rubi will be guiding us on our mushroom adventure. Rubi is a fungi enthusiast who has been foraging for wild edible mushrooms for over a decade. Foraging for fungi allows them to reconnect with the land and ancient extraterrestrial lifeforces 🍄
The mushroom pictured is an Agaricus genus mushroom, but the species is unidentified. Popping out of land mixed with pebbles and rich iron oxide, it revealed itself as Farmer Salifu guided our team through a neem tree forest in Northern Ghana.
What will you find on your mushroom adventure?! ✨
This training will be hosted in Oakland, California, on Ohlone land. The exact location and driving directions will be sent to all attendees in an email after registration.
NOTE: Our offerings are curated specifically for people who identify as Black, Indigenous (of any colonized lands) and/or Queer. For us, it's critical to create safe learning and healing spaces for our people, where we can be alongside others who share intersecting identities and stories of resilience and survival 🖤
