About this Event

The Hospice New Zealand Fundamentals of Palliative Care is for Health Care Professionals.

(This programme is not suitable for the general public and is for Health Professionals only)There is no cost for this programme.

The Fundamentals programme will give you an overview of how to care for people with palliative care needs in your role as a health care worker. Being educated about palliative care will help you improve the assessment and outcomes for people in your care, thier family and whanau, as well as yourself and other health care workers.

The programme consists of registering for the online modules and then attending a one day workshop. *Registration for the online modules and workshop is essential.

* Please note, the pre-requisite to attend the workshop is to complete the Fundamentals of Palliative care Knowledge Hub online modules 1 & 2 online self-learning.

Attendees can complete the remaining modules (3, 4 & 5)soon after the workshop and we will then award them the Hospice New Zealand certificate of Fundamentals of Palliative Care, which is 8 hours professional development from the workshop.

* Attendees are welcome to complete all 5 modules before the workshop to gain their certificate on the day of the workshop.

There are 3 steps to this programme, see below.

Step 1.

To start the online modules, you will need to first enrol via Knowledge Hub https://knowledgehub.hospice.org.nz If you are registering after office hours or on the weekend, it may take up to a few days to have your registration confirmed by our education administrator. You will be notified via email once accepted and you can then start the online modules.

There are 5 online modules that each take about 1 hour. The first 2 of these need to be completed as they are a pre-requisite for the workshop.

Please note that each online module takes about 1 hour and there are 5 modules to complete. The first 2 of these need to be done as a prerequisite for the workshop, 3 & 4 can be done afterwards if you haven't done them prior.

Step 2.

The 5 self learning online modules are :

*1. Essence of Palliative Care, (*Pre- requisite to attending the workshop)

*2. The Palliative Care Approach, (*Pre- requisite to attending the workshop)

3. Managing Pain and Long Term Illness, which consists of two modules Pain,

4. Other Symptoms and Pharmacology, and Chronic Illness & Dementia.

5. The last module is Care and Support at the End of Life.


Step 3.

To complete the programme you will need to attend a one-day free workshop. * You will need to have completed modules 1 & 2 first)

  • Attendees can only attend the workshop on Friday 14th November if they have completed the Online Modules 1 & 2 as these are a pre requisite. (3, 4 & 5) can be completed afterwards.
