Katy and Beverley have joined forces to bring you two very different Folk/Traditional inspired dance styles.
There are so few people teaching Traditional/folklore styles in the Uk, which is a shame as they are so wonderful to dance and learn about. These few monthly workshops we aim to bring you just that so come and dip your feet into traditions, history and good grounding, its fun we promise.
11am-12.45pm
BEVERLEY-EL HAGALLA
I will be teaching the reda style dance which was inspired by his visit to the Mersa Metrouh area of western Egypt. Learn about the traditions, costumes, music and dance from the area and how it evolved into a popular stage dance.
It can be a little energetic but we will definitely take it at a pace that suits every one. We will concentrate on signature moves and technique and if we have time put together a small amount of choreograph. Its lots of fun so come and join me for dance el Hagalla stylee
1.15pm- 3pm
KATY-TUNISIAN
Katy has been dancing all of her life and discovered Middle Eastern and North African dance over 25 years ago. She began teaching in 2002 and currently holds weekly classes in East Lancashire.
Her love of folk dance is shared by the members of Kasbah, her performance troupe and they especially love performing this Tunisian dance to one of Leila Hedad’s field recordings. It always goes down well at haflas.
This is a dance combining different styles from Tunisia inspired by the National Troupe of Folk Art that was founded in Tunis in the 1960s when Tunisia became independent and wanted to showcase its traditional music and dance
We use Shaabi and Mozoued styles in particular but go up on our balls (half point) to show the dance off more as per the stage versions from the National Troupe. If you were dancing at a party you wouldn't need to be so high!
Although it looks complicated and very high energy, it isn’t as difficult as it looks! The traditional hip twists form the foundation of most of the moves and, once you get into the rhythm, the music drives the movement.
Most of all, it’s brilliant fun to dance!
PRICE
one workshop £22 or OAP £20
