----------
The ironclad was a new kind of warship first used in the Civil War. Previous warships had been built out of wood which made them vulnerable to sinking by cannonballs. Ironclad warships, however, were protected with an outer armor made of iron.
Students will receive fundamental instruction on this important historical milestone in naval technology, get a steam engine demonstration and participate in a hands-on drawing activity.
Full STEAM Ahead! is a new series of demonstration discussion/workshops designed for home school students and led by museum educator, Mike Galloway. These programs will be held on the last Wednesday of every month. Topics are generally related to science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics, or “STEAM”. All activity materials are provided.
Occasionally, a program may be held on a different day due to a museum special event. Check our website or Eventbrite for the most updated listing.
