About this Event
**SPECIFIC LOCATION WILL BE SENT 2 DAYS BEFORE THE EVENT
This hike is adapted for Los Angeles from a night program I used to teach kids in Yosemite National Park! Think of it like the sleep away summer camp program you wish you'd been able to do as a kid.
For LA Climate week, a special focus will be on the ways climate change and overall human development negatively impacts nocturnal residents and our night skies, and of course learn about how we can treat them all a little better.
NEW 2025:
- A much better telescope to get a close up view (and phone pic) of the full moon and any planets that might be visible!
- A bat detector to "hear" and identify the ultrasonic sounds they make for echolocation! As long as it's warm enough, because bats hybernate if it's too cold.
We'll explore our local environment as the landscape shifts from day to sunset to night, learning about the ways in which both flora and fauna shift along with it. Learning about bats, night blooming flowers, owls, and other nocturnal creatures. Hiking through some of Griffith Park's primary bat and owl habitat, we'll also explore the ways in which our own eyes adjust (or don't) to darkness with a couple of fun games.
This is also the start of GLOWORM season (yes gloworms are real), so we'll be keep an eye out for their brat green lights.
We will avoid using headlamps or any other light source as much as possible, but the nearly full moon will rise early enough to provide us with ample light to show us the way on this wide and mostly flat Griffith Park trail.
