Whetstone Park, by the pond
Every morning I walk like this around
the pond, thinking: if the doors of my heart
ever close, I am as good as dead.
Every morning, so far, I'm alive.
--from "Landscape" by Mary Oliver
Every morning, so far, I'm alive. But, some days I am more alive than others. From moment to moment, I have the choice to turn away from life into distraction and self-deception or to keep the doors of my heart open to receive the world and to receive others. Before my time is up, may I be present and practice kindness in action, speech, and mind.
This full moon in January, the Gichimanidoo-giizis (Great Spirit Moon) in the Ojibwe language, we gather to practice our heart-opening. Remembering that we are alive and sharing in that awareness with each other, we form a circle of mindfulness and loving-kindness. In the tradition of our Buddha-ancestors, we will take the opportunity of the moon's rise to open our compassion to one another and devote ourselves to acting for the benefit of all sentient beings.
Meet down by the pond at Whetstone Park. Depending on the weather and the availability of shelter we may need to relocate, but we begin by gathering by the pond (past the parking lot for the Park of Roses).
Dress for the weather. Social distancing and mask-wearing will be practiced. Kids and teens welcome.
Portable toilets are available nearby at the park.
A loose community of practice, Mud Lotus was formed in 2016 for the cultivation of stillness, engagement, and belonging for ourselves and all beings. Regular meditations at the west end of Walhalla Rivine on Tuesdays at 9:00AM, on Zoom on Wednesdays at varying times, and on Zoom on Thursdays at 9:00AM.
May all be well!
