In a nutshell, a bunch of musicians put their name in a hat and 4 random names are drawn at a time to form a fuckband which has typically a half hour to learn 3 songs which they then perform live.
Here's how it works:
The event brings together a number of musicians from the scene - most play or have played in at least one local band, while some have never played in a band at all despite being talented musicians...
1) All these musicians put their names in a hat.
2) 4 names are randomly pulled out, and these 4 musicians are the new fuckband.
3) They are given a package containing 4 sets of lyric sheets with chord changes and mp3s for 10+ songs. They will choose 3.
By this point the 4 members should have also settled on who should play what instrument as its rarely 1 drummer, 1 bassist, 1 guitar and 1 singer... usually its 1 singer & 3 drummers or 1 guitarist & 3 bass players etc, so having multi-instrumental players is certainly a bonus but if not then it's down to who can fake it best - this is in fact one of the best parts of FBFOR as it takes various skilled artists from all walks of life, takes them out of their comfort zone and tests their ability to adapt and improvise within an unfamiliar setting.
4) Once its decided who will play what and which 3 songs to learn, they go into the silent rehearsal room to rehearse. The silent rehearsal room will be in the salon next door to LanaLou's where an electronic drum kit, a bass, a keyboard, 2 guitars and a couple microphones are set up with a headphone mix and can listen to a recording of the songs. Typically each band is given 30 minutes to learn their parts (10 min per song)
5) After their half hour of silent rehearsal is up, they have only a few minutes to get a drink, get on stage (tune up, adjust levels etc) and most importantly - COME UP WITH A NAME for your new band so you can be introduced properly, and finally perform your 3 hits.
This process is repeated every half hour until there are no names left in the hat or the venue closes.
