Join us on Sunday, January 11th, at 2 PM at the Leon County Public Library Main Branch in Room B as we host Kellie Keys and Dr. Joel Trexler, who will discuss the FSU Wakulla Springs Lab and how they combine scientific research with scientific communication to learn and teach about one of the largest freshwater springs in the world.
Kellie Keys is the communication director of the FSU Wakulla Springs Lab. She works with a team of FSU interns from various backgrounds to produce research-based outreach materials, which are edited by scientists and communication scholars at the university. She also teaches undergraduate classes in environmental communication.
Joel Trexler is the Director of FSU’s Coastal and Marine Laboratory and a Professor in the FSU Department of Biological Science. He is an aquatic ecologist whose recent research activities include restoration ecology and environmental monitoring, invasive species ecology, and food-web ecology. He is currently working with a team of environmental scientists studying sources of water to the Wakulla Spring and the impact of water constituents on aquatic ecology of the Upper Wakulla River.
Tour info: Attendees will have the chance to sign up for the Waters of Wakulla Tour, provided by Kellie through the Wakulla Springs Lab. These driving tours (in your own car) begin in Tallahassee and conclude at Wakulla Springs State Park. Six stops with mini-walks and short discussions explain what makes our local waterways so special. Tours are fun, friendly, and free of charge. (Park entry is $6/car.) There will be several spring dates available or a custom tour date can be arranged for the Friends of St. Marks Refuge with ten or more participants.
