Join Gilbert Achcar and Isabel Hilton in conversation at the Frontline Club on how Ukraine and Gaza are reshaping global power
About this Event

The end of the Soviet Union was meant to also end the cold war that had dominated the globe for decades - it famously signaled “the end of history,” according to Francis Fukuyama.

Yet in the three decades since, conflicts as disparate as Kosovo in the 1990s, the Ukraine invasion and the on-going war in Gaza have demonstrated geopolitical relationships are as rigid as anything seen at the height of the Cold War.

Are we in a period of change, with new alignments, new enemies and new chances for confrontation? Or does the current global disorder mean the world is locked into a new cold war, doomed to fight everlasting wars, whether in Ukraine, Gaza or even Taiwan?

In this salon, Gilbert Achcar, professor in the department of development studies at SOAS and author of The New Cold War: The US, Russia and China from Kosovo to Ukraine, and Isabel Hilton, writer, broadcaster, veteran foreign correspondent and the founder of China Dialogue, join New Lines’ Faisal Al Yafai and Lydia Wilson for a wide-ranging discussion.

The event will be followed by a Q&A discussion.
