Ruth Burton, Archivist, will present a fascinating selection of highlights From the Stacks, drawing on her work with the William Barnes archive. This illustrated talk will offer insight into the depth and richness of the collection, revealing stories, discoveries, and lesser-known materials connected with William Barnes’s life and work.The talk comes at a significant moment for the archive. Work to preserve the William Barnes Archive will begin this November at the Dorset History Centre, following the William Barnes Society’s successful £35,000 fundraising campaign in support of the project. The archive, comprising 65 boxes of letters, manuscripts, and papers — has been held at the Dorset History Centre since 2018 and is owned by the Dorset Museum and Art Gallery. Ruth Burton will lead the preservation work, building on earlier cataloguing carried out by volunteers.
Attendees will also have the rare opportunity to view some of the original archival items discussed during the talk, offering a closer look at this important literary and historical collection.
