From the Sea to the Stars: Exploring the Past and PresentWednesday, March 2, 2022

Voyagers from the Castilian Canary Islands off the coast of Northern Africa help to establish the City of San Antonio upon their arrival in 1731, after an arduous journey across the Atlantic. Our current Canarian colleagues now boast the wonderful, and highly technologically advanced, Gran Telescopio Canarias, the world’s largest optical/infrared telescope. Using this marvelous wonder, we can continue to explore our own galaxy, black holes, or planets around distant stars.
In this event we celebrate the start of Hispanic Heritage month by looking to our past and future, as we remotely connect to the Gran Telescopio Canarias and explore the universe with Sergio Fernández-Acosta, Scientific Instrumentation Manager at GRANTECAN and Dr. Chris Packham, UTSA Astronomy and Physics; joined by Freddie Bustillo, President of the Canary Islands Descendants Association.
