A Way to Fund Your Lab

Dr Fady Alnajjar, an associate professor at the college of IT at UAE University, will present the story of Meta Touch - a startup he co-founded during the pandemic.

Having a startup was a challenge as a faculty member and a researcher. The motivation to start Meta Touch was to carry and transfer research skills to society during pandemics and disasters. Having the startup helped Fady to secure funds for his lab from Meta Touch revenue, created opportunities to provide training and recruiting for undergraduate and graduate students, and was a chance to offer small seed funds to other startups to be established.

About Dr Fady Alnajjar

Fady Alnajjar received his M.Sc. Degree in Artificial Intelligence and his PhD. Degree in System Design Engineering from the University of Fukui, Japan, in 2007 and 2010, respectively. Fady has been a Research Scientist at the Brain Science Institute (BSI), RIKEN, Japan until 2016 and then became a visiting researcher in the same institute. At RIKEN, he conducted a neuro-robotics study to understand the underlying mechanisms for embodied cognition and the mind.

He then started his interest in exploring the neural mechanisms of motor learning, adaptation, and recovery after brain injury from the sensory- and muscle-synergies perspectives. His research target is to propose advanced neuro-rehabilitation robotics/applications for patients with brain impairments. He was also a visiting researcher at the University of Michigan-USA, and at the Neural Rehabilitation Group in Spanish Research Council, Spain. In 2017, he joined the College of Information Technology at UAE University in UAE as a faculty member.

Currently, Dr Fady is an Associate Professor at UAE University and the director of the AI and Robotics lab. His research expanded to developing rehabilitation robotics for people with Motor disabilities, Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and the Elderly with Cognitive Impairment.

Fady has published more than 80 Journal and conference articles and has more than eight registered patents. In addition to being an academic, Fady is the co-founder and CEO of Meta Touch.

About Meta Touch

As researchers across the globe continue to come up with new inventions to tackle COVID-19, a team of researchers, innovators and students from the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) in Al Ain are using their talents and have launched an innovative touch-less solutions start-up with the support of the UAEU’s Science & Innovation Park. Meta Touch is focusing on converting existing technologies into touchless solutions and thus is helping to minimise contact with potentially contaminated areas and reduce the risk of cross-infection.
