The University of First Presbyterian brings you guest speaker Dr. Cheryl White of LSU-Shreveport presenting "From the Catacombs to Caravaggio: Depictions of Christ in Art" on April 12, 2023 at First Presbyterian at 900 Jordan Street. There will be a meal served at 6:00pm (cost $10 - reservations are required for dinner) with the presentation following at 6:30pm. The presentation is free and open to the public.The depiction of Jesus in western art underwent dramatic transformations from the earliest known images in the ancient catacombs, and again from the Middle Ages into later eras - how and why? We will explore changes beginning with the sixth century Christ Pantocrator image through the Middle Ages, the High Renaissance, and into the modern period, including some well-known masterpieces such as Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper, Michelangelo’s Last Judgment, up to the unique expressive representations of Caravaggio.
DR. CHERYl WHITE, Professor of History at LSU Shreveport, will present an exciting glimpse into Christian Art History in this program she recently gave for the Smithsonian Institution World Art History Program. Dr. White teaches Medieval and Early Modern European History, and holds the endowed Hubert Humphrey Professorship in History and the Endowed Yancy Strain Curatorship at LSU Shreveport. She’s published 8 books and is an active historic preservationist. She is a frequent speaker
and guest lecturer.
