Absorbed in waves of turmoil and frustration for over a decade – from recent pandemic upheaval to ongoing political struggles – we note that an ignition point has arrived in the long but low-burning chain of events. Our past projects and shows reflected on these significant phenomena occurring on both the national and global stages. In a state where history and information are tightly controlled by those in power, artists work as archivists and protectors of histories, riddlers of truths and lies.
Wrapping up the year 2021, Gallery VER is pleased to present ‘From Simmer to Ignition’, a collective show featuring artworks by 8 distinctively different artists. The selected works embody a wide range of media and subjects. Among the highlights are artworks by Rirkrit Tiravanija and Pattara Chanruechachai, who utilise the same medium – newspaper presenting day-to-day yet significant events – to reveal political meanings hidden between the lines. Meanwhile Nutdanai Jitbunjong’s new works offer up souvenirs of past glory from the archives, rendered unfitting to contemporary eyes. Elsewhere, Thasnai Sethaseree’s vivid paintings lure viewers with their celebratory façades before revealing the dark truth beneath, while Nuttapon Sawasdee’s moving images show his perseverance in presenting a long-forgotten symbol.
Although displaying different points in Thailand’s timeline, all the artworks lead to our current point of historical collision. Created at various times over the past 10 years, the selected works summon up collective memories as well as forgotten tales to chart a decade of turmoil. Paintings, installations, objects and moving images create a collage with a thread to lead viewers through the labyrinth of confusion. Sifting through this history hidden under silent ashes, the artworks and their voices might just keep us from suffocating in this age of anxiety.

ระหว่างที่เราจดจ่ออยู่กับกระแสแห่งความวุ่นวายและความผิดหวังในทศวรรษที่ผ่านมา ตั้งแต่ความสับสนอันเกิดจากโรคระบาดในช่วงเร็วๆ นี้ ไปจนถึงความขัดแย้งทางการเมือง เราสังเกตได้ว่านี่เป็นจุดเดือดซึ่งถูกจุดขึ้นด้วยการเผาไหม้ในความร้อนต่ำมาอย่างยาวนาน อันเกิดจากปรากฏการณ์แบบลูกโซ่ โปรเจคต์และนิทรรศการที่ผ่านมาของแกลเลอรี่ต่างเป็นการสะท้อนปรากฏการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นทั้งในประเทศและระดับโลก ภายใต้รัฐที่ประวัติศาสตร์และข้อมูลถูกควบคุมภายใต้ผู้มีอำนาจ ศิลปินทำงานในฐานะนักจดหมายเหต ผู้กักเก็บและปกป้องประวัติศาสตร์ ผู้ตั้งคำถามระหว่างความจริงและคำลวง
เพื่อเป็นการปิดสิ้นปี 2021 นี้ แกลเลอรี่เวอร์มีความยินดีที่จะนำเสนอ ‘From Simmer to Ignition’ นิทรรศการรวบรวมผลงานของแกลเลอรี่ โดยศิลปินที่โดดเด่น 8 คน ผลงานที่ได้รับเลือกมานั้นครอบคลุมสื่อและประเด็นที่หลากหลาย ในผลงานที่น่าจดใจเหล่านี้ มีผลงานของฤกษ์ฤทธิ์ ตีระวนิช และภัทระ จันทร์ฤาชาชัย ที่ใช้ เช่นหนังสือพิมพ์บันทึกเหตุการณ์สัพเพเหระหากแต่มีอิทธิพล ในขณะเดียวกันผลงานใหม่ของณัฐดนัย จิตต์บรรจงนำเสนอของชำร่วยจากความรุ่งโรจน์ในอดีตที่กลับกลายว่าไร้ค่าในปัจจุบัน นอกจากนั้นภาพจิตรกรรมสดใสของทัศนัย เศรษฐเสรี หลอกล่อผู้ชมด้วยฉากหน้าที่เต็มไปด้วยการเฉลิมฉลอง ก่อนจะกระแทกให้ล้มด้วยความจริงที่อยู่ข้างใต้ ขณะที่ผลงานภาพเคลื่อนไหวของณัฐพล สวัสดีฉายความอุตสาหะของเขาในการดูแลสัญญะที่ถูกหลงลืม
แม้จะนำเสนอหมุดหมายต่างกันตามกาลเวลา ผลงานทุกชิ้นล้วนนำมาสู่การประทุและปะทะในปัจจุบัน ผลงานที่ได้รับเลือกมานั้นถูกสร้างขึ้นในช่วงสิบปีที่ผ่านมา ต่างเพรียกหาทั้งความทรงจำร่วมและเรื่องเล่าจากสถานที่อันห่างไกล จิตรกรรม, ศิลปะจัดวาง, วัตถุ, และภาพเคลื่อนไหวเหล่านี้ได้ปะติดปะต่อเหตุการณ์ทั้งหลายเข้าด้วยกัน เรียงร้อยผ่านวงกฏแห่งความสับสน หากเมื่อร่อนกรองเถ้าถ่านเงียบงันที่ปดปิดประวัติศาสตร์แล้ว ผลงานศิลปะและเสียงของมัน คงช่วยเราจากการจมดิ่งลงภายใต้ยุคสมัยแห่งความวิตกนี้
