From Silence Into Sound: The Craft of The Personal Essay
A Two-Part Writing Workshop for Black women, femmes and nonbinary teens
led by Eva Freeman
Saturday Oct 4 (Session 1)
Saturday Oct 11 ( Session 2)
3PM - 5PM
Have a story that you've always wanted to tell?
Or an essay prompt that's got your head spinning?
Join us for two workshops that explore the craft of the personal essay, and gain a sense of empowerment and agency by sharing your story with others.
These workshops will examine the three building blocks of a strong essay: scene, summary and musing. We will read model texts that display the use of all three. We will talk about how to construct scenes using sensory details (sight, smell, taste, etc.). We will also look at how writers use summary to move quickly through time and we will examine the way they “muse” on the page, exploring questions or concerns that lack definitive answers.
This workshop will serve young people ranging in ages from 13-17.
It will be especially helpful for high school seniors who are working on their college applications. For the younger women, they can start practicing the form in anticipation of applying to schools.
Space is limited.
