About this Event

From the grandeur of the Prussian Core to the lively "Hackesche Höfe" and the former Jewish Quarter, Berlin-Mitte is a convergence of historical splendor and modern energy. Once abandoned and severely neglected during the communist era in East Berlin, this area transformed into an international experimental field for activists, artists, and bohemians after the fall of the Wall. Its rich cultural life and meticulous restoration efforts attracted investors, establishing it as one of the first districts of gentrification.

As we wander through the maze of narrow streets and hidden courtyards around Auguststraße, we encounter the densest concentration of galleries in Europe. Among them stands the iconic Tacheles, a relic from the opulent "Golden Twenties" transformed into a symbol of creative freedom and independence. For 22 years, Tacheles served as a sanctuary for radical creatives, leaving an indelible mark on the cultural landscape of not just Berlin, but beyond.

Join us on a journey through time in Berlin-Mitte, where every cobblestone whispers tales of the past, and every mural paints visions of the future.

The tour will be guided by Yolanda Cvitak, a seasoned and certified Berlin tour guide since 2006. Raised in the South of West Germany during the 1970s, her multicultural upbringing (Slovenian mother and Croatian father) instilled in her a passion for languages and travel from a young age. Her multicultural background fueled her curiosity to explore different cultures and connect with people on various levels. In the early 1990s, Yolanda made Berlin-Mitte her home, pursuing her studies in English Philology and Comparative Literature amidst the city's transformation into a unified Germany. These formative years in Berlin not only shaped her academic pursuits but also deepened her understanding of the city's complex history and vibrant culture.

Today, as a tour guide working with an international scope of clients, Yolanda offers more than just historical facts; her tours provide a glimpse into Berlin's soul, weaving together its rich cultural heritage, tumultuous history, and vibrant contemporary life, all aimed at sparking the curiosity of guests to learn and explore more on their own.
