A Wartalk on the Rise and Fall of the Duke of Monmouth, looking at his military career and his two campaigns in Britain. From Hero to Rebel!
This Wartalk will bring together historians and writers to look at the military career of James, Duke of Monmouth (1649 to 1685). From commanding his first troop of cavalry in 1666, Monmouth rode to save Medway in 1667, led the assault on Maastricht in 1673, saw victory at the Battle of St Denis in 1678 and commanded at the Battle of Bothwell Bridge in 1679. This string of military successes made Monmouth the Hero of the nation. Yet in 1685 he returned to England as the Rebel leader of a Whig Army in open rebellion. At the Battle of Philip's Norton his forces defeated a larger Government Army, but on the 6 July 1685 he was defeated at the Battle of Sedgemoor.
From Hero to Rebel will shine a light on the real Duke of Monmouth and his military exploits.
