From Gourock to Glasgow and Back: Bet Low (1924-2007) and George Wyllie (1921-2012)
2024 is the 100th anniversary of Bet Low’s birth. Bet was born in Gourock and from 1945 Glasgow became her home after completing her studies at Glasgow School of Art. Her extensive career started with the creation of theatre sets for Glasgow Unity Theatre. The artist is best known today for her tranquil landscapes of Scottish islands, particularly Orkney.
George Wyllie was born in Glasgow and made Gourock his home from 1960. George and Bet knew each other well, initially through the Glasgow and west coast artists’ initiative, the Glasgow Group. Their art is distinctively different, although with important crossovers in inspiration, particularly the sea. How did each of these strong personalities make their mark in the artworld?
