About this Event
Artistic Director Laurie Evan Fraser, with her 35-voice mixed choir accompanied by pianist Hye Won Cecilia Lee, and the Cantemos ensemble, invite audiences on their musical journey; From Darkness into Light. The concert features beloved seasonal baroque favorites including Break Forth O Beauteous Heavenly Light from Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, and excerpts from Handel’s Messiah. On the contemporary side are Morten Lauridsen’s Sure on This Shining Night, two of John Rutter’s enduringly popular Christmas songs and Moses Hogan’s arrangement of the spiritual This Little Light of Mine.
For Chanukah, the choir performs We Are Lights and the choir honors the African American cultural celebration of Kwanzaa with Harambee (“pull together”)in Kiswahili.
Cantemos offers up three Spanish numbers. Quieres Contar mis Estrellas? (Do You Want to Count My Stars?) composed by Venezuelan Miguel Delgado Estevez and two aguinaldos (carols) – one by by Venezuelan composer Cesar Alejandro Carrillo, the other, Los Reyes del Oriente (Kings from the East), from Puerto Rico.
There are a limited number of in-person tickets available on a first-come basis and the concert will be live-streamed on Youtube for free (donations appreciated!)
