Definitions will be given for words such as neurodivergent, neurodiverse, neurodiversity, and others that are frequently misused. Attendees will understand the historical context of neurodivergence, associated diagnoses, and how using correct and appropriate language is an important and trauma-informed approach to care.

Supporting Regulation in Neurodivergent Individuals and Families

Significant consideration will be given to explaining 8 sensory systems as sensory experiences are a commonly overlooked source of dysregulation. Common traits such as communication and relationship differences can impact the emotional load a person experiences. Approaches will be demonstrated that can be used to effectively support neurodivergent individuals that will range from one on one interactions to considerations for work environments.

Objectives

  1. Attendees will be able to list common sources of emotional dysregulation experienced by neurodivergent individuals.
  2. Attendees will be able to describe a model for the relationship between the different sources of dysregulation.
