The art of overpainting
Friedhard Kiekeben’s installations, wall drawings, and paintings have been shown internationally since 1986. The work plays with notions of simulation, matrix, copy and repetition across painting and printing media. The artist’s latest body of works 'overpaintings', begun in 2018, hybridize between pixels and paint, by combining digitally created, printed, and hand-painted image layers. This often-overlooked artform was established by a select number of pop-related artists such as Arnulf Rainer, Sigmar Polke, Gerhard Richter, and John Baldessari in the late 1960s. A large body of Friedhard Kiekeben’s new overpaintings, made throughout the pandemic, will be shown at Champaign Park District Galleries throughout November and December 2023.
Friedhard Kiekeben’s works of art take form as digital wall drawings, paintings and overpaintings, etched and printed metal Friezes and sculptures, and sequences of original prints. His projects often include tailor made and site-specific installations—such as ‘Cascade’, ‘Quantum Ice’, ’Loop’, or ‘Tourbillon’—and have been exhibited internationally in private and public galleries, museums, and other venues for over 30 years.
Friedhard Kiekeben also helped develop innovative and nontoxic printmaking methods; many of which are widely practiced. This work is published in books such The Contemporary Printmaker (NY, 2003), in frequent magazine articles, and on several online resources he publishes. The artist also has a curatorial practice. He received his MPhil (RCA), Printmaking from the Royal College of Art, London, 1993, Dipl Des (HfGO), Fine Art/ Printmaking/Visual Communications at the Hochschule für Gestaltung, Offenbach, 1990, and studied Painting and Drawing at Edinburgh College of Art in 1986 in the EU Program.
