2023 Cantina Valle Isarco Pinot Grigio $25.94
Valle Isarco, or Eisacktal, is a subregion of Alto Adige DOC. Alto Adige sits at the very north of Italy, on the border of Austria, hence why it's common to see Italian or German terms on the label. Valle Isarco is one of the coolest regions in Alto Adige and is known for crisp and refreshing white varietals. This is Pinot Grigio, grown on the skeleton-rich alluvial soils containing diorite and quartz of southern Valle Isarco. The wine does not go through malolactic fermentation and is aged on the lees in stainless steel.
NV Val del Prete Bizzarro $36.94
In the 1960's, the grape Arneis was on the verge of extinction in Italy. That is no longer the case as the grape has experienced a resurrection in Roero, Piedmont. This is 100% Arneis that experiences a day and a half skin maceration and is fermented in French oak and spends seven months on the lees. Val del Prete translates to Valley of the Priest, named for Abbot Felice de Grèsy being forced to reside here in exile in 1850.
2022 Markus Prackwieser Mediaevum Vernatsch $28.94
The Prackwieser family has owned the Gump winery for over 200 years in Alto-Adige. Markus took over the family estate in 2000 from his father before him when he realized his love for wine. Alto Adige has an alpine climate with elevations up to 1,000 meters. There are warm winds with a Mediterranean influence that blows from Lake Garda and cool winds from the Dolomites. The slopes are extremely steep, between 50-70 grade. The result of the climate and elevation is wines high in acidity with a pronounced minerality. This is Schiava, AKA Vernatsch, the most planted grape in Alto-Adige. It is a refreshing red with low tannin, low color and high acidity that is meant for easy drinking.
2022 Cantina del Pino Barbera d'Asti $24.94
The Vacca family has been working the vines at Cantina del Pino since 1920. Giuseppi bought the property from a friend, and when his son was born, he planted a pine tree in the backyard of the property signifying the highest point on the Ovello hill, a well-regarded cru in Barbaresco. The pine tree is what the winery is named after. It is currently run by husband-and-wife Renato and Franca and a small team of passionate locals. This is Barbera d'Asti made from 100% Barbera aged in oak for 12 months.
2017 Ar.Pe.Pe. Grumello Rocca Piro $75.94
Ar.Pe.Pe is one of the most sought-after wine producers in Lombardy. It was established in the 18th century and the family has been growing Nebbiolo for over 150 years and five generations. They make wine in Valtellina Superiore DOCG, a region that sits on the Swiss border and is the most northern wine region that grows Nebbiolo, known here as Chiavennasca. In the 1970's, the family went through hardship and sold off several vineyard plots along with the name, Pelizzatti Perego. They were "reborn" in 1984 when it was renamed to Arturo Pelizzatti Perego, or Ar.Pe.Pe, named for the founder of the winery and reacquired some of the vineyards that were sold. They highlight the importance of patience in the winery, giving the wines the time they need without rushing the process. This is coming from the Grumello subregion of Valtellina, which encompasses terraced vineyards 670 meters in elevation above the Adda River.
2013 Ar.Pe.Pe. Sassella Vigna Nuova Regina Riserva $128.94
This is another Ar.Pe.Pe that comes from the Sassella subregion, known for being the finest. "Nuova Regina" translates to "New Queen". The soil is extremely rocky and sits at 450 meters of elevation. This is where the largest number of old vines have been preserved. In the best years, these grapes produce an age worthy Riserva, which mandates three years of aging.
